166952-newfoldershortcut_original The latest release Windows 7 comes with a nifty feature, keyboard shortcut for creating a New Folder. I don’t know why Microsoft took this long to implement this feature? But anyways Windows 7 users are lucky enough to be able to create a New Folder instantly on their desktops, Windows Explorer and where ever they want just by pressing simple key stokes, Ctrl-Shift-N.

Isn’t it good if Windows XP users had a chance to create a similar shortcut?, yes there is a tool which helps Windows XP users to create keyboard shortcut for creating new folder.

The tool is called as mdAxelerator, which was created solely for this purpose. It allows you to add custom name to the newly created folder, instead of just “New Folder”. I have named new folder as “[Made This New Folder By Pressing Ctrl-Shift-N]”. There is a reason behind this, mdAxelerator had a drawback. The tool itself cannot create a new folder if there already exists a folder with the same name. I used this phrase so that it makes me to change the new folder name to something else before i create another new folder with the keyboard shortcut.

mdAxelerator is puny little app with 16KB size, and having the ability to start itself at window startup, it is the most needed app for every Windows XP user.

Download mdAxelerator

Other similar apps for creating New Folder, which you may like to try:

#1. Hotkeys: Download Hotkeys

Install and run application, follow my instructions to add keyboard shortcut to create New Folder.

  • Right click on the system tray icon and select "Edit hotkeys".
  • Hit the “New” button in the Hotkeys window and enter the following information.

Description: New Folder

Action: Send Keystrokes

Keys to Send: %F{RIGHT}~ OR %F~~

Hoy Key: Ctrl Alt N

Hit “Apply” Button and try yourself.

Note: Hotkeys has a drawback, it can only create new folder in Windows Explorer windows and not on desktop.

#2. bxNewFolder: Download bxNewFolder

bxNewFolder adds a "New Folder" button to the toolbar of Windows Explorer. It also provides a hotkey (F12) to create a new folder within the Explorer quickly.

Yeah actually XP already has its own “Make a new folder” button too, to create a new folder in Windows Explorer, while it’s located in XP Webview Panel/Common Task Pane, see screenshot: http://img243.imageshack.us/i/standardxpnewfolderbutt.jpg/ (and just like Windows 7 RTM Explorer now), but yeah some people would love it’s on the explorer toolbar as well as Open/Save dialog box.

Since Baxbex new folder offered only old Windows 98 style icon (not matching with new XP visual style), just download free add on new folder button in XP Explorer Toolbar (my created-skinned/reshacked bxnewfolder with Vista style icon etc) + hotkey and floating dialog box, fully functional and working as well: Screenshots: http://img263.imageshack.us/i/newfolderbuttoninxpexpl.jpg/ and http://img263.imageshack.us/i/cleanerusefuldialogboxa.jpg/
